Mathura
Known as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, Mathura lies at the centre of Brajbhoomi. It is located 145 kilometers from Delhi, and can be easily reached by a short road trip. It is considered as one of the holiest cities in all of India. Being the home of Lord Krishna, Mathura has may sites of religious and historical significance. Of these, the most prominent ones are temples devoted to Lord Krishna himself. The entire city has many small lanes which are filled with shops selling all kinds of stuff ranging from sweets to glittering jewellery. This city has elaborate celebrations for all the major festivals. The festival of Holi, however, deserves a special mention. The best time to visit this beautiful city is during the months of August to March. This is because, the summers get very hot and it is difficult to enjoy the overall experience of this magical land. However, the place is populated throughout the year ardent devotees seeking the blessing of the Almighty.
Places of Interest
1. Shri Krishna Janmabhumi – This is believed to be the exact location where Lord Krishna was born. It houses the prison in which he came into this world. Apart from the prison, this site also has a magnificent temple which has beautiful idols of Lord Krishna and Radha (his love interest). Hence, because of its significance, it is the most visited location in Mathura.
2. Dwarkadheesh Temple – It is the most sacred temple of Mathura. Built in 1814, it boasts of some of the most amazing architecture in the region. The temple is the place to be during the festivals of Holi and Janmashtami, as the celebrations are done on a very grand scale.
3. Vishram Ghat – This is believed to be the resting place of Lord Krishna after he killed the mighty Kansa. Vishram literally means rest in English. People visit this place to take in the positive energy that this place radiates. The evening aartis are an unforgettable experience.
4. Gita Mandir – It is another very famous temple in Mathura. Gita Mandir gets its name from the fact that the entire Gita (a holy book of the Hindus) is inscribed on the walls of this beautiful temple. Also, the gorgeous exteriors, make this place a must visit for all.
Vrindavan
A twin city of Mathura, Vrindavan lies merely 10 kilometers from it. It is believed that after his birth in Mathura, Lord Krishna spent his childhood here. There are more than hundred temples devoted only to Lord Krishna and Radha. The city gets its name from the fact that at one time, there used to be a basil (known as Brinda in sanskrit) forest (Van in Hindi) engulfing the city. Much like Mathura, the primary attractions here also are the splendid temples. Whenever one plans a visit to Mathura, it is understood that they will visit Vrindavan involuntarily.
Best Time to Visit
As is the case with Mathura, Vriindavan should also be avoided during the summer season. The best time to visit this place is during one of the major Hindu festivals, as the city transforms into a mystical land altogether.

1. Govinda Dev Temple – This temple was built by Raja Sawai Man Singh of Jaipur in the year of 1590. It is a magnificent seven-storied structure boasting of one of the finest architecture in entire North India. The highlight of this temple is the huge lotus sculpture on the ceiling in the main hall. It is to be noted that the monkey population is immense in the area, and proper care must be taken.The aura generated by Govinda Dev Temple inadvertently draws visitors.
2. Banke Bihari Temple – One of the most renowned temples all over the world is the Banke Bihari Temple. The reason for this is the idol of Lord Krishna. The eyes of the idol are said to be too powerful for long periods of viewing. Hence, at very frequent intervals curtains are drawn and opened for people to pay their homage. There is a huge line to seek the Lord’s blessings here, as this is believed to be one of the most powerful and wish-fulfilling temple.
3. Seva Kunj – The Seva Kunj is the place where Lord Krishna used to dance with Radha and the other Gopis There is a small temple inside the premises called Rang Mahal. It is said that even till this date, after sunset, the bushes in the garden transform into Gopis and Lord Krishna and Radha spend time in the Rang Mahal. Hence, no one is allowed to be near this place during the nights, as it is said, whoever fails to do so, dies. Spooky isn’t it? Well, that’s the power of God!
Thus, there is no doubt that these two cities are more than fittingly known as the Abode of Gods. While it may not offer a typical quiet get away from your busy life, the spiritual fulfillment is bound to make you feel at peace with yourself.
