Harry Potter! The name itself makes us move to the magic world of wizards. Harry Potter is one such fantasy novel written by British author J.K. Rowling. One always thought and salute to the imagination of this woman, how she could imagine such a wizarding world, co-relating all the characters and writing such a big novel. It became more popular with the release of Harry Potter film series that consists of eight fantasy films. Filled with witches, wizards, their spells and epic battles between good and evil, the film series was directed by David Heyman. Stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as the three foremost characters: Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The production took over ten years to complete, with the main story arc following Harry Potter’s quest to overcome his arch-enemy Lord Voldemort.
Now imagine what if one of the imaginative things in this fantasy book can be related to something discovered in reality. That must be exciting to know and read for all the die-hard fan of Harry Potter novel as well as film series.
One such element was found in the Kans forest area of Karnataka recently.
In the Kans forest area in Karnataka, a new species of spider has been discovered. The new species of spider was discovered by a group of researchers and naturalists Javed Ahmed, Rajashree Khalap and Sumukha Javagal who are from Mumbai. Everyday some new species are discovered, but this spider is more famous because of its shape and its resemblance with the sorting hat of Harry Potter series.
The tiny spider has been named Eriovixia Gryffindor after Godric Gryffindor, one of the founders of the Gryffindor house at Hogwarts-the school of witchcraft and wizardry in the famous J.K. Rowling much loved series- Harry Potter. This is because the spider takes the shape of the enchanted Sorting Hat, which was originally owned by Gryffindor and later used to sort new students into Hogwarts houses, as a camouflage to guard itself from predators during daytime.
On asking Javed Ahmed the reason for this name, he said that as a youngster he was very fond of reading Harry Potter books. So, when he discovered this tiny spider, he thought of the magical sorting hat that was used in the Harry Potter book.
Getting to know more about the features and characteristics of the spider, the scientists added that the beasts has power of its own using its triangular shape to camouflage into a dry leaf to hide from predators, while it sleeps during the day. Further, the nocturnal araneid measures just seven millimeters and has a hairy shell, spiny legs, and its trademark feature: a pointy, triangular abdomen.
This was the sixth new spider species discovered in the past two years by Javed Ahmed and his fellow researchers. The researchers described it as an “ode to draw attention to the fascinating, but oft-overlooked world of invertebrates.” The naturalists on Saturday, 10 Dec 2016, dubbed the insect Eriovixia gryffindori in the Indian Journal of Arachnology.
